KUPE SAILS ACROSS PACIFIC TO LANDFALL AT WHITIANGA.
James Cook arrived in 1769.
He was greeted in a threatening manner by three canoes, but traded with the tribes.
The original name of Whitianga is Te Whitianga-a-Kupe, meaning Kupe's crossing
place.
Kupe is believed to have sailed about 950AD in a giant voyaging canoe from Raiatea, near
Tahiti, with about 72 people on board..........more NOW in the Whitianga
